Well I have to say I was disappointed. Having been on the anti Iraq war marches, where there were quotes of up to 1 million people attending, the attendace today was 7000. Admittedly this was a global effort and demonstrations were going on in 45 countries. It was cold and windy which will have reduced the numbers but there are 2 orders of magnitude differences in interest in the two issues. There was a lack of unity on the podium. There was an impassioned speech against agrofuels, someone encouraging direct action even breaking the law which was difficult to countenace with more balanced speeches by Micheal Meacher(Labour) and Chris Huhne(Lib Dem). I came away feeling pretty hopeless. The kind of action required to reverse global warming is so dramatic that it will cause considerable discomfort and politicians and free markets have little immediate and direct incentives to impose austerity when consequences seem so remote. One good thing Chris Huhne said was that we have seen the first casualty of politicians ignoring the green lobby in Australia's election hinting that Bush and Brown better watch out.
